Renewing a Clear credential: no coursework required
The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) renews Clear teaching and services credentials on a five-year cycle without course or service requirements. You renew online and pay the fee; there is no professional-development hour count to document.

Do not buy units to renew a Clear credential. Nothing is counted at renewal. Preliminary credentials advance to Clear through an induction program, not coursework. Units matter in California for one reason: your district's salary schedule.
How pay moves: columns, units and salary points
Each California district bargains its own certificated salary schedule. Almost all of them pay by a grid of steps (years of service) and columns (education). Moving to a higher column is the "lane change". The columns are usually written as a degree plus semester units, such as BA+30 or MA+45, but the vocabulary varies:
- Units. Most districts count semester units earned after the bachelor's degree. Some count only upper-division or graduate-level units, and some require that the units be earned after a specific date.
- Salary points. Los Angeles Unified and some other large districts convert approved coursework into points rather than counting raw units.
- Pre-approval. A large share of districts require you to request approval of non-degree coursework before you take it. Approved units are then applied once the transcript arrives.
Because these rules are local, the only reliable answer is the district's own schedule and its HR or Human Resources "column advancement" page. The district blocks below link to those documents.

- Open your district's current certificated salary schedule and find your column.
- Read the column-advancement rules: what units count, whether pre-approval is required, and the transcript deadline for the next pay year.
- Ask HR in writing whether the specific course or provider is accepted. Keep the reply.
- Plan backward from the transcript deadline, allowing time for the provider to issue an official transcript.
Deadlines are local. California has no statewide transcript date. Missing your district's date usually delays the column change by a full pay year.
