Salary lanes, PDUs and license renewal

Oregon has paused professional development reporting for license renewal until 2029, but district salary schedules still pay for credits, often counted in quarter credits. This guide explains both.

License renewal: PDU reporting is paused

The Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) renews Oregon licenses. Preliminary licenses run three years and Professional licenses five. TSPC has suspended professional development unit (PDU) reporting for licenses that expire before July 1, 2029; the Commission has agreed to reinstate reporting for licenses expiring on or after that date.

i

The pause is about reporting to TSPC, not your job. District employment requirements for professional development continue during the suspension. Check with your district before you assume nothing is required.

When reporting resumes, TSPC's renewal table (updated April 1, 2026) is reported to list 75 PDUs for Preliminary licenses and 125 for Professional licenses. Confirm these figures with TSPC for your license type. TSPC counts:

  • 1 semester credit = 30 PDUs;
  • 1 quarter credit = 20 PDUs;
  • 1 hour of professional development = 1 PDU.

PDUs can be documented through PEER verification, official transcripts, or a PDU certificate and log, tied to your license's expiration date. See clock hours, CEUs and semester credits for how the units compare.

How pay moves: district lanes in quarter credits

Each Oregon district bargains its own licensed salary schedule. Many count quarter credits. Sweet Home School District's 2025-26 schedule is one published example:

ColumnEducation (quarter credits)
1BA
2BA+24
3BA+45
4BA+69 / MA
5BA+90 / MA+24
6BA+110 / MA+45

This is one district's schedule, shown as an illustration. Your district's columns and credit rules may differ; see lane change, explained for the general mechanics.

Before you enroll in anything

  1. Check your license expiration date. If it is on or after July 1, 2029, plan for PDU reporting.
  2. Ask your district whether it has its own professional development requirement during the TSPC pause.
  3. For salary, open your district's licensed schedule and check whether it counts quarter or semester credits.
  4. Convert before you buy: 1 semester credit is 1.5 quarter credits by TSPC's PDU ratios (30 and 20).
  5. Ask HR in writing whether the specific course counts for column movement, and by what date. Keep the reply.
!

Salary deadlines are local. TSPC does not set them. Check your district's agreement for the transcript date.
