Salary lanes, credits and certificate renewal

Idaho renews certificates in credits, and at least half of them must be college or university credit. Salary lanes are set by local districts, separately from the statewide Career Ladder.

Renewing a certificate: 6 credits every 5 years

The Idaho State Department of Education (SDE) Educator Certification renews certificates on a five-year cycle. Renewal requires 6 semester credits, of which at least 3 must be college or university transcripted credit.

  • In-service hours. 15 in-service hours count as 1 credit, up to a maximum of 3 credits.
  • Credit level. Graduate-level or undergraduate credit is accepted.
  • Transcripts. Official or unofficial transcripts are accepted for renewal.

For how hours and credits relate, see clock hours, CEUs and semester credits.

How pay moves: Career Ladder and local schedules

Idaho's statewide Career Ladder governs how the state funds and allocates teacher salaries. It is separate from the salary schedule your district bargains locally, which decides how education credits move you on the schedule. Read your district's schedule and negotiated agreement for the credit rules; the general mechanics are in lane change, explained.

Boise School District

Official transcripts go to HR by October 1. An HR date stamp on or before that date qualifies for retroactive pay to the start of the year.

West Ada School District

Idaho's largest district. Salary placement and movement rules are in its 2026-27 negotiated agreement.

Before you enroll in anything

  1. For renewal, make sure at least 3 of your 6 credits are college or university transcripted credit.
  2. Count no more than 3 credits from in-service hours (15 hours per credit).
  3. For salary, read your district's negotiated agreement for which credits count and when.
  4. Note that salary placement may need an official transcript even though renewal accepts unofficial copies.
  5. In Boise, get transcripts to HR with a date stamp by October 1.
  6. Ask HR in writing whether the specific course counts. Keep the reply.

Salary deadlines are local. Missing your district's transcript date usually moves the change to a later pay period or year.
