Salary lanes, renewal hours and license renewal

Utah renews licenses on renewal hours over five school years, and many Utah educators renew without filing a form. District salary schedules count semester credits earned after the bachelor's degree.

Renewing a license: 100 hours over 5 years

The Utah State Board of Education (USBE) renews Professional educator licenses every five school years under Board rule R277-302. The currency is the renewal hour: 100 per cycle.

  • Hours. One hour of qualifying activity counts as one renewal hour.
  • No fixed credit multiplier. USBE's renewal guidance does not set a fixed semester-credit-to-hour multiplier. Count activity time and confirm with USBE how a specific course is credited.
  • Automatic route. Educators employed in qualifying Utah settings for all five preceding years do not need to submit the renewal form or an administrator signature.

For how hours and credits compare, see clock hours, CEUs and semester credits.

How pay moves: levels and semester credits

Utah districts set their own salary schedules. Jordan School District's 2025-26 Schedule C is a published example. It places teachers on levels by education, counting semester credits:

EducationLevel
BA1
BA + 20 semester credits3
BA + 40 semester credits5
MA6
MA + 30 semester credits8
Doctorate10

Jordan counts hours earned beyond and after the bachelor's degree and the original license. Other districts use different levels and rules; see lane change, explained for the general mechanics.

Before you enroll in anything

  1. Check whether you qualify for automatic renewal through five years of qualifying Utah employment.
  2. If not, plan for 100 renewal hours within the five school years and confirm how USBE will credit a course.
  3. For salary, open your district's current schedule and read when credits must have been earned.
  4. Ask HR in writing whether the specific course counts toward your next level, and by what date. Keep the reply.
  5. Allow time for an official transcript to be issued before that date.
!

Timing rules differ. Some Utah districts count only credits earned after your degree and original license. Credits taken earlier may not move you.
